Contemporary Casting Workshopmanmade and natural objects. Experienced potters will share their casting experiences and reveal methods of mixing plaster and provide many secret techniques and tips. This workshop on mold-making, casting and surface techniques is one that will generate ideas, help you work more efficiently and give you tips and ideas that you can use in your studio everyday.

The University of Richmond, Cambell’s Ceramic Supply and Nabertherm are proud Sponsers of the University of RichmondContemporary Casting Workshop.  It will open with a keynote speech by Richard Notkin, an internationally recognized ceramic artist and authority on plaster molds and slip-casting. His topic, The Philosophy of Creative Slip-Casting: Thoughts on Plaster and Clay from the Past Thirty-nine Years, will be presented between 6-6:45 pm at the Tyler Haynes Commons. Attendees will have the opportunity to register, enjoy light hors d’oeuvres and meet the presenters at the reception prior to the keynote from 4:30-5:45 pm in the Tyler Haynes Commons.

The featured artists, Michelle Erickson, Mika Negishi Laidlaw, Paul McMullan, Richard Notkin, Tom Spleth, and John Williams will share their journey in understanding mold-making and how they have incorporated this process into their work. Each will present their 3-hour presentation twice over Saturday and Sunday to give attendees the opportunity to hear the majority of the presenters.

This workshop is for professional potters, recreational potters, educators, and students at any level who want to advance their knowledge and understanding of mold-making and plaster. Be prepared to leave the conference armed with the knowledge and confidence to build, cast and reproduce your own objects.
